1. Can you accommodate a family reunion of aprox. 50 persons?

We can accommodate large groups in our own country fashion.  We would set aside the whole of our property for your exclusive use.  This would include both cabins, the whole campsite, shower room, indoor and outdoor toilet facilities.  If you require meals, we would close the restaurant to the general public while serving your group.  We provide buffet style meals served indoors with seating both inside and outside under a covered awning.   We would have to know in advance if your require any special services such as electricity to the campsite, propane B-B-Q, afternoon canoe rentals or such.

2. Do you provide guided tours of the lake chain? How does a  guided trip work?

No, we do not provide guided tours of the lake chain.  There are only four companies registered to provide guided tours around the Lakes.  We recommend our good friends at  Pathways Tours,  who have been guiding groups around the Bowron lakes for over 25 years.  You do not have to be guided to go around the chain,  but if you prefer a relaxed trip with most of  the work done for you and all the food provided then try Pathways Tours.  Every year the Park provides each Guide Company with 5 or 6 Bowron trips.  These trips leave on certain dates as determined by the Park, and each group is limited to about 14 persons.  It is best to contact the Guide Companies for their current dates, prices and availability.

3. Do you have to be guided to go around the Bowron Chain?

No, you do not have to be guided to go around the Bowron Chain.  The majority of paddlers are unguided, but it is best to have someone in your group with paddling and back country camping experience to help provide instruction when needed.

4. How far away is Bowron Lake from Quesnel, Barkerville and Wells? Do you provide transportation between Bowron and these towns?

We are situated 120kms (75 miles) from Quesnel, and 28 kms (18 miles) from the highway 26 junction which leads to Wells or Barkerville.  At the junction you turn right and travel 2 miles to Barkerville or left and travel 3 miles to Wells.  We can not provide a steady transport service between Bowron Lake and Quesnel, Barkerville and Wells, because we are a small family run business and we are usually kept busy working the store, restaurant and canoe rentals.  We do, however, need to travel between all points for our own work, supplies and groceries.  We usually make one supply trip a week into Quesnel, and my husband travels to Wells every Monday to Thrusday for work.  We welcome inquires, in advance, to see if your traveling dates correspond to one of our town trips, so that a pick up might be arranged.

5. Can you give me more details about your Clipper Yukon canoes?

The Clipper Yukon is a versatile canoe that is built to last and has proven itself in rental use and adventure racing across Canada.  It's a canoe that gives you a comfortable feeling, both in its roominess and its stability.  This canoe was designed by James van Nostrand; one of the most prominent and well-known canoe designers in Canada.  The Yukon has the capacity to be a good family canoe and is well suited for wilderness tripping.  It glides nicely, tracks well and resists being blown around in the wind.  In moving water, the Yukon is predictable and quick to manoeuver.

The Yukon's 14" center depth provides a 900 lb capacity with 6" of freeboard.  A flared bow and stern make it seaworthy in rough conditions.  It's length is 16'8",  Bow/stern depth is 20",  width at gunnels is 36",  weight is 72 lbs, and has foam filled flotation tanks at both the bow and stern.  from Clipper Manufacturers Spec Sheet

6. Do you allow dogs in your campsite and cabins?

Yes, dogs are welcome.  All we ask is that they are kept under control and do not bother fellow Bear River Mercantile guests, and that you clean up after them.

7. What are the best paddling months? When are the bugs gone?

In the 70's and 80's we had a concurring weather pattern that usually meant sun in May, rain in June, mix of rain with sun periods in July, mix of sun with rain periods in Aug. and a beautiful sunny Sept.   But when it comes to weather, as we all know, there is no normal any more.  For the past 10 years our weather patterns have been turning into an unpredictable hodge podge.  It seems to me that May and June are now interchangeable.  One year we will have a sunny May and rainy June, the next we will have a rainy May and sunny June.  July and Aug are a mix of sun, storms and rain.  The past two summers have been quite hot and dry especially in Aug.  Sept is now unpredictable with a mix of sun and rain and sometimes cold!  The best planning would be  to expect and prepare for everything and anything.  The least buggy times are in the pouring rain (mosquitoes can't fly when they are being pelted from above)  and in the very hot, dry weather.  It is the cool/warm damp times they like best -  like morning, evening, after a rain.... bring the bug dope!!
