The Museum & Archives

Read the inscriptions that trappers James Duffy and Jack Stead scribbled over their trap line cabin door (ca.1930). Browse through the contents of Betty Wendle's kitchen hutch (ca.1920).  Examine Joe Wendle's axe work and tool box. Read the story of George Isaac and the Goat River Trail (ca.1800).  Stand under the claws of Frank Cushman's famous Grizzly (ca.1970). Flip through the guest book from the old Lynx Creek cabin (ca.1950). See an array of Frank Kibbee's different traps (ca.1920).

Bear River Mercantile is full of history.  Sandy Phillips started researching and collecting area history in the early 1970's and has never stopped. Every year something new....or should I say "Old".... is added to the walls, windowsills, showcases, photo albums, and files at Bear River Mercantile. Sandy also likes to keep her research current. You can view her collection of documents on more current Bowron Lake issues such as the "kokanee VS salmon smelt debate (2000)" or the not so current "provincial park VS no park debate (1960)".

School Group Programs

Bear River Mercantile welcomes schools to visit the museum and learn more about the Bowron Lake area.  Please e-mail ahead, or when in the area send a teacher in to arrange for times.  As our place is small and space is tight,  larger groups are asked to break into smaller units of 8 students with 2 adults at a time.
